Star Network Topology
This is the most common topology at present. Star topology is widespread and very flexible in terms of network management and troubleshooting. Failure of any node does not disrupt the overall operation of the network. On the other hand, the central device is a hub, and more often on modern networks, a switch that connects all the nodes, forming a single point of failure. Failure at this level renders the network completely unusable. Ethernet network is an example of star topology. The main drawback of this topology lies in the length of the cables used. it is linear network.






Advantages of Star Topology
  • It has the advantage of low deployment cost.
  • Network related problems can be solved easily.
  • If N devices are connected to each other in a star topology, then the number of cables required to connect them is N. Hence, it is easy to install.
  • Each device only needs 1 port to connect to the hub, so the total number of ports required is N.
  • It's strong. If one link fails, only that link will be affected and not the other.
  • Easy to identify and isolate the fault.
  • Star topology is cost effective because it uses inexpensive coaxial cables.

Disadvantages of Star Topology

  • If the hub on which the entire topology is dependent fails, the entire system will crash.
  • Installation cost is high.
  • The performance is based on a single concentrator i.e. HUB.
  • Its implementation requires the consumption of long cables.
